Retinol

Retinol, Retinal, Retinoids...What’s the difference?

All are forms of vitamin A. They just vary in

strength + speed + irritation

Bottom line:

Same goal → smoother, clearer, stronger skin

Think of it as a conversion ladder

Retinyl Esters → Retinol → Retinal → Retinoic Acid (Tretonoin)

Weaker/Gentler <-------------------------> Stronger/Faster

Only retinoic acid is “active” immediately.

Everything else has to convert in the skin.

What Should You Use?

Sensitive/first-time/dry skin

→ Start with retinyl ester or low-does retinal

Normal/early aging (30s/40s)

→ Retinol (consistent use matters more than strength)

Acne-prone/experienced users

→ Retinal or consider prescription Tretinoin

Advanced aging/stubborn concerns

→ Tretinoin (derm-guided)

Stronger isn’t better if you can’t tolerate it.

How to use it

(this is important)

Night Only: 2-3X/week to start → build slowly

Apply to dry skin → use moisturizer before if sensitive

Expect: dryness and mild peeling

Avoid mixing with strong exfoliants at first.

SPF every morning. No exceptions.
